An Introduction to Mobile Web App Development // TECH 459

Jeroen van Duffelen, Co-Founder, Widescript

Thursday, June 2nd  from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm.

The debate about mobile native vs. mobile web apps is years old. One keeps battling about performance and look and feel while the other fights for platform independency. Some apps depend on advanced features of the device's operating system. For these apps it makes sense to go native. The majority of apps however can be build using web technologies as they don't require all those features. This introductory class will cover the basics of mobile web app development. It will reveal the secrets and hacks which allow you to start building great web apps that look and feel like native apps.

In this course, students will learn the the basics to build a mobile web app using jQuery Mobile. jQuery Mobile is a unified user interface system across all popular mobile device platforms, built on the rock-solid jQuery and jQuery UI foundation. Its lightweight code is built with progressive enhancement, and has a flexible, easily themeable design. Prerequisites: familiarity with HTML, CSS, Javascript (in particular DOM Events and DOM Manipulation).

Students will layout a basic application in class using HTML and the jQuery Mobile framework.
